Dr James Gamble.
Consultant Cardiologist at the Oxford Heart Centre. Specialist in heart failure and cardiac device implantation.
I trained at Cambridge and Oxford medical schools, and completed my specialist training in cardiology in the Oxford region. I was appointed as a consultant cardiologist at the Oxford Heart Centre in 2017.
My particular areas of expertise are heart failure and cardiac device implantation, but I see patients with all sorts of heart problems. I lead the heart failure service in Oxfordshire and have taken on additional leadership roles of other teams within cardiology as well. As part of this, I lead a team of doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals. Alongside this, I am the cardiovascular lead for the integrated care board covering Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
I implant over 150 pacemakers, implantable defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices each year. I continue to very actively develop my skills in this, taking on new techniques and procedures such as conduction system pacing.
I hold a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Oxford for my research into optimising cardiac resynchronisation therapy, and have published more than forty peer-reviewed scientific papers. I remain active in research in my specialist areas.

Time to listen.
Time to explain.
I take time to listen, explain things clearly, and involve patients in decisions about their care. My aim is to make sure that we develop a clear idea of what's wrong, how we can improve it, and ensure that you understand the situation.
I aim to see you within one to two weeks of your enquiry wherever possible. Most investigations — ECG, echocardiogram, rhythm monitor — can be arranged on the same day as your consultation, so you don't have to make a second trip.
You'll leave the appointment with a clear plan and a written summary, and I'll keep your GP informed at every step.
Active in clinical research.
I have research interests in managing heart failure. I serve as an investigator on several clinical trials.
Considering an appointment?
Most new patients are seen within one to two weeks at Manor Hospital, Oxford. No GP referral needed for self-pay.
